Saints Mary and John from a Crucifixion scene, presumably Flemish, 2nd half 15th century

Wood, carved in the round, the backs only summarily carved. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. Two figures designed as a pair. The Virgin Mary is depicted with Her hands clasped and Her head sunken in mourning. Saint John, the favourite disciple of Christ, looks upwards to where a figure of Christ on the cross would originally have formed the central focus of this group.
Wear with losses to the hair of Saint John and the plinth upon which Mary stands. Height of each 47 cm.

Acquired on the Frankfurt art market in 1973. - Subsequently in German private ownership.
