Jakob Maurus

A carved limewood figure of Saint Sebastian by Jakob Maurus

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding. The reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Remains of presumably original polychromy. A depiction of the saint standing in contrapposto designed for a frontal viewpoint. Saint Sebastian is shown bound to a treestump with his right hand raised and his head inclined to one side. The exceptional quality of the carving is particularly exemplary in the expressive physiognomy and the drapery of the cloak drawn around the figure's body. The scheme of the drapery is reminiscent of the style of the carver Jakob Maurus, who was active in Allgäu in around 1530/40. The work is espeically comparable to an Anna Selbdritt group by the same sculptor kept in the Vorarlbergisches Landesmuseum in Bregenz.
Minimal wear, minor losses to the right hand and the plinth. The arrows lacking. Height 55 cm.

Certificate
