Probably Bavaria circa 1520

The Virgin and Child, probably Bavarian, circa 1520

Wood carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With uniform older polychromy presumably dating from the late 19th century. A figure of the crowned Virgin Mary standing in a gently swaying pose on an overgrown rocky outcrop. The Christ Child, who the Virgin holds in her left arm, is shown wrapped in a cloth and blessing the beholder. The voluminous folds of the Virgin's cloak form an elegant contrast to the shallow pleats of Her high-waisted gown.
The Virgin's loosely attached right hand lost. Wear with losses to the crown and the fingertips. Height 86 cm.

Provenance
