Probably Italy 18th century

An 18th century ivory relief of the resurrection of Christ, probabaly Italian

Mounted on a wooden base and back panel. Worked in numerous separate pieces applied with carved ivory, some ivory figures carved in the round. The sarcophagus of carved boxwood. A finely carved scene with numerous figures arranged as if on a stage. In the centre we see the empty grave within a stone hollow from which Christ arises in an aureola surrounded by clouds accompanied by two angels. In the scene below, an angel sits upon the open grave, carved with a scene of Christ’s burial, ready to inform the three Marys of the saviour’s resurrection as they approach from the right, whilst the figures of the soldiers sent to guard the grave stand terrified and blinded on the left.
Wing of the upper left angel lost. One of the clouds around the aureole replaced. Minor wear and losses. Mounted to a wooden socle. 54 x 42 x 27 cm (with socle).
