A lacquer panel by Onaga Tamotsu. Circa 1965-1985

Depicting a stylised fish with a long pointed tail fin in waves. Silver, black and turquoise lacquer on a beige-coloured lacquer ground, the eye of aogai. In original frame, on the reverse with a paper label inscribed rensaku (authorship), the title "Nagi" (Calm) and signed Onaga Tamotsu with seal Onaga.

Onaga Tamotsu was born in 1931 in Nagami, Toyama prefecture. He studied lacquer under Yamazaki Ritsuzan. From 1951 onward he exhibited at the Nitten and other exhibitions and won many prizes and honours. 1965-1967 his works toured in Europe (Berlin, Rome, and London).
