Hermann Plathner

The Well-Drawn Portrait

Oil on canvas. 62 x 75 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: H. Plathner 1869.

Hermann Plathner from Westphalia was an important proponent of the narrative style of painting popular with the Düsseldorf School. Alongside theatrical compositions and subtle colouring, humorous motifs are typical of his oeuvre.
