An important Berlin mirrored cabinet
Mahogany and plum veneer on oak and softwood with ormolu mountings. Comprising a mirrored upper section with two doors beneath a broken arch pediment, the lower section with a four drawers and knee-hole. Decorated on three sides with cuboid marquetry, the pediment with a vacant rocaille cartouche. H 220, W 122, D 67.4 cm.

An identical cabinet is housed in the Schlossmuseum Gotha (cat.: Prinz Heinrich von Preussen ein Europäer in Rheinsberg, Berlin-Brandenburg 2002, no. VII. 62. Burkhardt Görres writes: "Der Typus dieser Schränke wurde durch zwei in Huis Doorn (Exilsitz Kaiser Wilhelm II. in Holland) erhaltene Exemplare aus dem Besitz der Kronprinzessin/Königin Elisabeth Christine, Gemahlin Friedrichs des Großen, bekannt (...), die unser Wissen über aufwendige Möbel der Epoche Friedrich Wilhelms I. schlagartig erweiterten. (...) In der Epoche Friedrich Wilhelms I. war es vor allem Königin Sophie Dorothea, die, wie sich an ihren Chatoulle-Rechnungen nachweisen lässt, immer wieder auch reichere Möbel durch die Hoftischler Martin Böhme und Schilanski anfertigen ließ, wobei Zedernholz und andere seltene Hölzer oft von der Königin bereitgestellt wurden." (p. 488 f.)
The piece in Gotha is monogrammed “PH” to a cartouche in the pediment, which would identify it as the possession of Prince Heinrich. Another piece for the royal family, currently in private ownerhip, with the initials “PW” for Prince Wilhelm is also known.
