A Berlin silver pitcher made for General von Tauentzien

Scalopped oval base supporting a fluted body engraved with the arms of the Pomeranian von Tauentzien family. H 22 cm, weight 337 g.
Marks of Johann Gotlieb I Matthes, circa 1734 - 37.

The Prussian general Friedrich Bogislav von Tauentzien (1710 - 1791) became the first recipient of the newly founded Pour le Mérite order, which he was awarded in 1741 by Friedrich II after the battle of Mollwitz. This honour is already reflected in the coat of arms engraved on this pitcher.
