A Neoclassical Vienna silver tea urn

Rounded tea urn resting on three winged lion-headed herms. The animal-headed spout with a small ivory handle, slip lid with laurel wreath finial. H 28 cm, weight 1,740 g.
Marks of Jakob Krautauer, 1818.

Jakob Krautauer (1772-1845) became a master in 1795 and is listed in guild records from 1801 - 1845. A partial halt in operations is recorded between 1836 - 1844. "His tax payments as of 1796 are unusually high, which speaks for a flourishing business." He exhibited at the first Vienna trade exhibition in 1835, and the second in 1839, where he was awarded a medal.
