A pair of monumental figural torches

Bronze and zinc cast with greenish brown bronze patina, gilding, with older wiring. Full-length figures of ladies in classical costume on round bases supporting large urns on their shoulders. The urns were originally intended as lamps, but only remnants of the former electrical fittings remain. Signed to the plinths: "A. Carrier". Casting flaws / small holes (predominantly to the reverse), staining / traces of sinter, presumably from being used outdoors. H 165 - 166 cm.
Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, um 1870 - 80.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824 - 1887) trained as a goldsmith but following his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he worked mainly as a sculptor and was befriended with Rodin. Following the Franco-Prussian war of 1871, several commissions led him to Brussels. From 1875 - 1887 he became artistic director at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory. He designed a number of large figural lamps, including works for the Paris Opera Palais Garnier.
