Georg Petel, circle of

A carved ivory Corpus Christi

Carved in the round, the perizonium partially freestanding. Figure of Christ crucified with three nails with arms raised high above the head, carved from a single piece of ivory. The work from the first half of the 17th century is characterised by the subtle modelling of the body and the finely detailed facial features, hands, and feet. This type of depiction displays strong parallels to the work of Georg Petel, who was active in Augsburg as the leading German sculptor of his era. Comparable works include the crucifix by Petel in the treasury of the Munich Residence and that in Frederiksborg palace in Denmark, both of which are dated to around 1628-1630.
With darkened hairline cracks and slight yellowing due to the nature of the ivory. Otherwise pristine condition with neither damage nor repairs. Mounted on an associated wooden cross with a reliquary repositorium, presumably 17th century. Height 40 cm, width of arms 11 cm (without cross beam and base)..

Provenance

South German private collection.
