South German after 1680

Portrait of Elias Veiel

Terracotta with remains of old polychromy, probably the original. This high relief oval panel portrays an Evangelical cleric surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists as well as eucharistic and memento mori motifs. The relief follows an engraving signed "Andreas Schuch pinx." (painter in Ulm circa 1645-1680) and "Bartholom. Kilian sculps. 1680", which allows us to identify the sitter as Elias Veiel (1635-1706), who was named superintendent of Ulm in 1678.
Losses to the upper and lower right edges. Minimal wear. Mounted on a newer wooden panel. 44 x 37 x 3 cm.

Provenance

Formerly Ulm Museum.
