Norbert Kricke
Flächenbahn
1950er Jahre
Steel, nickel-plated and soldered. On slate plinth. Overall dimensions approx. 24.4 x 37.9 x 9 cm.
Simultaneously to the clusters and knots, Norbert Kricke developed the so-called Flächenbahnen. For all intents and purposes, these also are specific clusters systematically uniting the lines in one plane. They regulate the manifold, unarranged motion impulses of the space knots into clearly directed paths, giving the motion within the space an unequivocally defined direction and multiplying their energy. The Flächenbahnen can also be considered as semi-permeable wall areas that capture the viewer's gaze, directing it to the left and to the right within the space.
The artist himself retrospectively commented on the concept of the Flächenbahnen: “Flächenbahn / line - shape of motion. / Motion - a form of time. / The suggestion of an open space / no limitation, /protruding into the space on both sides, / free in space, / a relief in itself, / double-sided.” (Ernst-Gerhard Güse, Architektur, Plastik, Raum, Norbert Kricke, Raum ¦ Linie, exhib.cat. Museum Liner Appenzell, Göttingen 2012, p.40).
