A painted kiri wood gigaku mask

Sukojû type with a comic and smiling expression, large eyes, a slender nose and fine slots for the nose and lips. Various coats of pigment, some flaking. Inside the name of the mask, and inscription reading Tessai mosu and kaô in red lacquer. Fitted metal stand.
Height 28 cm

This mask type relates to the comic story of king Suiko and his travails and depicts one of the drunken attendants of the king. They would appear at the end of the play, engaging in a humourous dance.
