An 18k rose gold "Matahari" diamond ring

The ring band with Renaissance revival engraved decor depicting two recumbent female figures flanking a prong set cape coloured old-cut diamond (ca. 2.30 ct, ca. 8.23 x 7.59 x 5.58 mm, S-Z, vs). With an old inscription inside the band "Mata-hari". Ring size 52. Weight 6.45 g.
Circa 1880/90.

It is not known what connection this ring bears to the illustrious name engraved into the band. Mata Hari means "sun" in the Malay language (literally "eye of the day") and would thus be a fitting inscription for a love token. However, this name is more closely associated to the legendary Dutch dancer who became famous around the time of the first world war for her exotic and alluring dance of the seven veils, and who also worked as a spy for the German secret service.
