A small ivory tankard with horses and dogs

Solid ivory, partially translucent when held up to the light. Slightly tapering form carved with four horses in a wooded landscape. The flat hinged lid with two dogs. C-shaped handle with a foliate thumbrest and fox's head terminal. A small open crack to the foliage of the base. H 20.3 cm.
Hessen, attributed to Friedrich Hartmann, mid-19th C.

Including an original hand-written letter in sepia ink that reads: "Ew. Hochwohlgeboren, habe ich die Ehre im Auftrag Ihrer Großherzoglichen Hoheiten den Prinzen Ludwig und Heinrich von Hessen den beifolgenden Becher mit der Bitte zu übersenden, denselben zum Andenken und als höchst(...) Dank für Ihre gütigen Bemühungen annehmen zu wollen. Mit der Versicherung den (...) habe ich die Ehre zu zeichnen Ew. Hochwohlgeboren ergebenster Karl Javlenz (?) Göttingen, den 11. Aug. 1857."
