Angelo Maria Crivelli is thought to originate from Lombardy. He specialised in depictions of game and other animals and was influenced by Flemish animal painting. His son Giovanni Crivelli (1680/90-1760) later also painted in the same genre, and the works of father and son are often difficult to tell apart. A similar piece by Angelo Maria Crivelli is housed in the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana (inv. no. NG S 2514).
