Flemish second half 15th century

A Flemish carved wood figure of Saint Elisabeth, second half 15th century

Possibly oak, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse partially flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. An expressive figure of a crowned saint in a long robe designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She wears a rosary hanging from her belt but her identifying attributes, the crown and basket in her hands, are almost entirely lost. The unique appeal of this devotional figure derives from her calm expression and the gentle swaying pose which is only marginally accentuated by the compact pleats of her gown.
Vertical hairline cracks. Losses to the crown and wear to the plinth. Height 93 cm.

Provenance

Belgian private ownership.
