A carved limewood figure of Saint Lawrence by Jörg Kändel

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A full-figure depiction of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He holds a book in his left hand as well as his identifying attribute, the griddle. His under-robe is deeply pleated and partially concealed by the pointed upper garment. The drapery and facial features of this figure, carved by the Upper Swabian sculptor Jörg Kändel, are highly comparable to his depiction of Saint Pancras in the altar of the parish church of Tinzen (Graubünden region), that was made in around 1510/1515.
The right hand, the griddle, and the plinth probably replaced. Minimal wear throughout. Height 75.5 cm.
