Hans Degler

A carved wood figure of the Virgin on the Crescent by Hans Degler

Presumably limewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With the original polychromy. A depiction of the Virgin Mary enthroned amidst clouds and resting Her feet upon a crescent moon, designed for a frontal and lowered viewpoint. The quality of this work is particularly evident in the lively drapery of the robes and especially in the way the artist has captured the intimate connection between the Virgin and the Christ Child, who Mary supports upon on Her knees. Hans Degler ran a large woodcarving studio in Weilheim in Upper Bavaria together with his father-in-law Adam Krumpper since 1590. His workshop completed important commissions for the Church of Saint Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg, among many others. This Virgin and Child can be dated to the early 17th century.
A dowel hole and three drilled holes to the upper part of the Virgin's head. a small breakage to the Child's left leg with an old backing. Wear with minor losses throughout. Height 75 cm.
