Probably Flemish 18th century

An 18th century carved wood personification of winter, probably Flemish

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Extensive remains of older polychromy, presumed to be the original. Standing figure of a bearded man with a covered head, fur-lined cloak, knee breeches, and boots. The woven birdcage held in his right hand as an attribute presumably an addition. The figure most likely originates from a series representing the four seasons.
The left arm and parts of the plinth lost, minor wear throughout. Height 31.5 cm.

Provenance

North German private collection.
