An important Iranian mortar

Cast bronze with high copper content, copper inlays, brownish red patina, gilding, traces of green corrosion. Polygonal facetted vessel on round foot with corresponding rim. With a rounded moulding to the centre. Each face decorated with stylised foliage in two rows. The rim with Kufic calligraphy and four teardrop motifs in relief. Verdigris mainly to the bottom, the underside of the upper edge and inside, a repaired crack due to usage. H 18, D 24,3 cm. Weight 6.6 kg.
Attributed to Khorasan, 12th C.

An identical mortar without the gilding in the Victoria & Albert Museums in London, museum number 948-1886.
A further example with gilding but more richly decorated in the Museu da Farmázia Lissabon, inv. no. 15214.
