A Netherlandish mortar with dolphin handles

Golden brown cast bronze with finely worn patina. Of narrow tapering form with a broad smooth rim. Decorated with two bands of arabesques interspersed with putti, vases of flowers, and lion's head mascarons beneath a band inscribed in capital letters: "LAVS DEO SEMPER 1654". H 14.1, D 12.7 cm. Weight c. 4.6 kg.
