A large signed and dated Flemish apothecary mortar

Thick cast bronze with chocolate brown patina. Decorated with several bands of concave mouldings and three bands of acanthus scrolls and putti at play holding vases (or mortars?) amid dense foliage, in the lower section vases of flowers flanked by winged putti and cornucopia motifs. Inscribed below the broad rim in capital letters: "J B WIERINCK ME FUDIT T OVERMEIRE A° 1680". H 34, D 42.5 cm. Weight c. 30 kg. Includes a corresponding pestle.
Belgium, attributed to Lokeren, 1680.
