Portrait of Cardinal Giuseppe Andrea Albani

Kalkstein, Vergoldung. A gilt limestone tondo with a portrait of the Cardinal in profile facing left. He wears a mozzetta (with hood) and a pileolus. Inscribed on both sides "GUI.CAR. / ALBANI". With a concave moulded rim surrounded by a narrow foliate border. H 9.5, D 56.5 cm.
Rome, around 1830.

This portrait of the cardinal, who lived from 1750 to 1834, may have been produced posthumously. The depiction of Albani as a pensive older man would speak for this theory, but it may also simply depict him in the last years of his life after the council of 1829. The tondo could have been made as part of a series of depictions of cardinals documenting an event.

Provenance

North Italian collection.
