Agnolo Bronzino, attributed to

Skeleton, striding left

Black chalk on paper. 40 x 27.5 cm.
Inscribed lower right: Agnolo Bronzino il vecchio..

Inscribed on the reverse: Angnolo Bronz Vecchio (...).
Drawings by this great Florentine Mannerist are exceedingly rare. Only around 60 sheets can be attributed to him with certainty, although Giorgio Vasari describes him as one of the greatest “disegnatore” of his age. The older “signature” on this sheet is probably a later addition by an unknown hand. The watermark shows that the paper originates from the 16th century, as it was used in Florence and Ferrara during this time.

Provenance

Acquired from Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, 18.06.1964. - Subsequently in a German private collection.
