A late 15th century carved wooden pietà group, presumably Upper Rhine Region

Carved in the round, mounted on an octagonal plinth, presumably associated. With older polychromy, the robes overpainted. A devotional image designed for a frontal viewpoint depicting the seated Virgin Mary cradling the body of Her dead Son in Her lap. The quality of this work is especially evident in the three-dimensional quality of the carving of the Virgin's robes, the diagonal composition of which accentuates the curve of Christ's naked body, presenting it to the devotional beholder.
Christ's left hand presumably replaced. Some vertical cracks. Minor wear throughout. Height 39 cm (with plinth)..
