Probably Franconia early 16th century

Early 16th century carved wooden figures of two apostles, presumably Franconia

Probably limewood, carved three-quarters In the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. Minimal remains of older polychromy. Half-length depictions of two apostles holding books in their hands, designed for a frontal viewpoint. Their identifying attributes are no longer extant, but the apostle with the short beard is generally identified as Saint Paul. The work can be related to the tradition of depicting saints Peter and Paul together. The fineness of the carving, especially of the saints' facial features, allow it to be assigned to the circle of Tilman Riemenschneider.
A crack through the face of the Apostle Peter with an old repair. Minor replacements and reinforcements to the plinth. The backs of both pieces with 12 x 5 cm strips of canvas. Minimal wear throughout. Height 47 cm and 48 cm.

Provenance

German private collection.
