A carved oak relief of Fortitudo and Caritas, Westphalia, second half 16th century

The reverse flattened.. This relief depicts personifications of the two Christian cardinal virtues of Fortitudo (strength) and Caritas (charity). The pendant piece mentioned in literature would have depicted Fides (faith) and Justitia (justice). These panels are said to originate from Burg Hardenberg.
With a visible join in the centre. In good overall condition. Mounted in a newer wooden frame. 65.5 x 52.5 cm (without frame)..
