Flemish 1st half 16th century

A Flemish carved wooden relief of soldiers from a Crucifixion scene, 1st half 16th century

The reverse flattened. With possible remnants of former polychromy. This pierced high-relief depiction presumably originally formed part of an altarpiece. It depicts five soldiers with weapons, some on horseback. The soldier on the left would have originally been shown driving his spear (now lost) into the sponge with vinegar, this, as well as the direction in which the other soldiers are looking, indicates that the group formed part of a Crucifixion scene.
A large replacement to the right beneath the horse, a further smaller replacement in the far left. Wear throughout. 54 x 62 x 8 cm.

Provenance

Belgian private ownership.
