A bronze equestrian statue of Louis XIV after Martin Desjardins (van den Bogaert)

Bronze sculpture cast in the round, engraved, chased, and patinated.. Following an apprenticeship under Peeter Verbruggen in Antwerp, Martin Desjardins van den Bogaert moved to Paris where he became a sculptor at the French royal court. Among many other orders, he also received the commission for the large bronze statue of Louis XIV in the Place de Victoire in Paris from Marshal Vauban in 1686. This was followed in 1688 by the commission from Jules Hardouin Mansart for the monumental equestrian statue of Louis XIV in the Place Bellecour in Lyon, that was completed in 1693 but first erected in 1713. Throughout the course of the 18th century, this sculpture became the model for various smaller format bronzes, of which the present work is one.
Minimal wear and abrasions. Mounted on a marble base. Height 45 cm..
