A rare ivory netsuke of Toenmei. Late 18th century

Dressed in long robes, holding a long staff in his right hand and a flowering chrysanthemum in his left. A karako next to him, looking up in admiration. Chipped.
Height 7.2 cm

In one of his poems from the series 'Drinking wine' the chinese poet Tôenmei (Chinese: Tao Qian; Tao Yuanming, 365/372 - 427) reflects on his life as a spiritual hermit.

Gathering chrysanthemums below the eastern fence
Leisurely and carefree, within the sight of the Southern Mountains

After a short career in government service, he retires to his home in the countryside in favour of a life of integrity and self-determination. This decision and his Daoist relaxed attitude towards life is also represented by the chrysanthemum, an autumn flower that blooms in defiance of early frost and thus, just like Tôenmei, embodies steadfastness.
