Summer chawan by Ôhi Chôzaemon (1901-1986). Ishikawa prefecture, Kanazawa, Ôhi kiln. Ca. 1970

Flat conical shape on a small foot. Raku type sherd with irregular notches inside and outside, covered by a thin shiny brown glaze. Stamped Ôhi inside the foot ring. Original wooden box, the inscription on the lid reading Hira chawan (flat chawan) / kyûdai (9th generation) Ôhi Chôzaemon and round seal Ôhi. With original white cloth (ukon nuno) stamped Ôhi.
Height 6.5 cm; diameter 14.7 cm

Ôhi Chôzaemon (1901-1986) was the son of the Eighth Chozaemon and he continued to produce tea utensils from age sixteen until his death at age eighty-six. At age 26 he received the title of Ninth Ohi Chozaemon following after his father. He was closely connected to the Urasenke Great Tea Masters.
