An ivory netsuke of Hotei and Fukurokuju. Early 19th century

Kneeling behind Fukurokuju, Hotei, the god of luck, cleans the recumbent god’s ear with a brush. With his head resting on a stiff fan, Fukurokuju appears to enjoy the treatment. Finely carved and engraved with a nice golden-yellow and brownish patina.
