A boxwood netsuke of Hotei. 18th century

The god of luck, seated in voluminous robes exposing his bulging stomach and chest, his left leg propped up and holding a Buddhist wish-fulfilling jewel (chintamani) in his right hand. Remains of a once black lacquering.
