A boxwood netsuke of oni with a sack, by Minsai. Around 1830

The little devil with metal eyes, dressed only in a rush apron, standing with a satisfied expression behind a sack which he is closing with a cord. Finely carved, engraved and lightly stained. Signed Minsai.
Height 4.4 cm

The two kanji on the bag indicate that it is the patience sack (kannin fukuro), the contents of which are mistakes/sins committed, kept securely tied up inside. However with the oni's presence next to the bag it might well be that he opens the bag to free all its negative content.
