A boxwood netsuke of Yojô. Around 1800

Kneeling, cutting a cloak with the sword in his right hand. Fine and moving carving with remains of a dark staining.
Height 4 cm

A rare depiction of the Chinese warrior Yojô, who tried in vain to avenge the murder of his master. Before judging himself, he cut the cloak of his enemy with his sword, to fulfil his duty at least symbolically.
