A large gold garnet corsage ornament

Five-part Baroque style sheet gold ornament comprising four pierced foliate motifs and a conforming cross pendant, all symmetrically encrusted with 45 garnets in closed settings. With a fixed ring bail on the reverse. Total H 19.8 cm. Weight 27.38 g.
Italy, first half 19th C.

This light repoussé pendant, based on courtly 18th century designs, is typical of the popular jewellery made in Northern Italy in the early 19th century. The pieces are very large and imitate heavy gold jewellery. Unlike their prototypes, pendants such as these were not sewn onto a corsage, but worn hanging from a cord. The Victoria and Albert Museum in London houses a similar example from the collection of Italian peasant jewellery assembled by the Castellani firm which was shown at the Paris World Fair in 1867.
