A Meissen porcelain Turkish style tea bowl

With rose petal relief painted in purple, blue and green with dotted gilding. The rim inscribed in Turkish with the date hijra 1170 = 1756/57. Blue crossed swords mark, dreher's number 56 (?), H in brown. H 3.9, D 6.9 cm.

Despite the Ottoman empire's participation in the Great Northern War, trade relations between Europe and the Levant intensified throughout the 18th century and especially after 1750. The Meissen manufactory was eager to enter the Turkish market and began producing porcelain especially designed to appeal to Oriental customers.
