A late Gothic silver gilt communion chalice

Lobed base with an applied Crucifix flanked by the engraved depiction of a kneeling donor and the inscription "Margareta... dedit / miserere mei deus". The faceted shaft with a compressed pommel with tracery ornaments and flowerhead appliques. The enamelled rotuli inscribed "IHESUS". Tapering cup with a smooth rim. Engraved with the weight below "w. ein Pfund und 9 loth mit der pattene". The base with some older restorations. H 18.5 cm, weight 468 g.
Unmarked, Northern Germany, 2nd half 15th C.

Formerly the collection of Leopold Salomon, Dresden, in The Hague as of 1932; sold to Hans Posse as part of the "Sonderauftrag Linz" in 1941; restitution to the Netherlands in 1946; exhibited in the Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht from 1946 - 2008; restituted to Leopold Salomon's heirs in 2008; Lempertz auction 946, 20th November 2009, lot 297; private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
