An Augsburg silver gilt columbine cup

Round lobed base supporting a pierced shaft with droplets and a waisted lobed cup with twist fluting. The domed lid with corresponding decor and a scroll finial. H 44.5 cm, weight 685 g.
Marks of a master from the Mair family, 1630 - 32.

Helmut Seling's attribution of this "moor's head" mark is based on its similarity to the armorials of the Augsburg goldsmith's family Mair, which produced numerous accomplished masters throughout the 17th century. The member of the family whose career corresponds most closely to the date of this assay would be Johann Paul Mair, who died in 1632 (cf. Seling no. 1454).
