Study of a Man's Head

Black and brown chalk. 35.8 x 25.5 cm.

The author of this impressive study has not yet been identified. It was most probably an artist from the circle of Andrea del Sarto or Rosso Fiorentino, that is, a painter active in the latter half of the 16th century in Florence working in the so-called “Florentine Mannerist“ style. Typical of this is the typology of the figure with his head turned back over his right shoulder. His deep set, shadowy eyes can also be found in a similar manner in works by the above-mentioned artists.

Provenance

Charles W. Centner, Michigan. - German private collection.
