Probably Rhineland mid-14th century

A mid-14th century figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Rhenish

Wood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With several layers of older polychromy, parts of which presumably are original. A large figure of the Virgin depicted standing in a gently swaying pose on a shallow plinth, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The Christ Child, dressed in a long drapery, holds a globe in His left hand and is supported by the Virgin over Her hip. The Virgin's pose forms an S-shaped curve that is accentuated by the vertical pleats of Her red dress, which form an effective contrast to the rounded folds of Her cloak.
The Virgin's right hand and the Child's right arm lost. A breakage in the lower right. The head and shoulders of the Virgin reattached with the help of replacements and canvas, as is the right half of the Child's head. With wear throughout. Height 126 cm.

Provenance
