Probably Maasland 14th century

A 14th century figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Maasland

Wood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With minimal remains of former polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the Christ Child, who is depicted fully clothed and carrying an open book, by Her side with Her left hand. The Virgin is dressed in a girded gown, but the sculptural quality of the work is largely defined by the cloak, which forms round, voluminous curves at the front and falls to Her feet in a cascade of drapery on one side.
The faces presumably amended. Vertical crack running through the Virgin's shoulder and the plinth. The Virgin's hand only loosely attached. Minor losses due to earlier insect damage and wear throughout. Height 115 cm.

Provenance

Belgian private collection.
