France late 17th century

A late 17th century French carved walnut figure of the mourning Virgin

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Pierced figure depicting the Virgin Mary seated and leant back looking upwards, depicted as if mourning beneath the cross. The sculptor César Bagard (1620-1709), active in Nancy, has recently been suggested as the possible author of this work.
With very minor wear. Mounted on a newer, associated wooden plinth that has been erroneously chamfered on the right. Height 32 cm (without plinth).
