Hermann Winterhalter was the younger brother of the famous portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. Like him, Hermann studied painting, travelling to Munich and Rome for further training. In 1840 he settled in Paris, where Franz Xaver also worked. The brothers had a very good relationship to one another and after the fall of the Second Empire both decided to retire to Karlsruhe. Hermann outlived his older brother by almost 20 years.
