View from the Palatine towards the Colosseum
c. 1852

Albumen print. 23.9 x 32.2 cm. Flush-mounted to original card, photographer's blind stamp, therein numbered '32' in pencil, below the image on the mount.

The massive structure of the Colosseum could be captured particularly well from the distant, elevated viewpoint provided by the Palatine Hill, which is why this particular view belonged to the standard repertoire of the Roman photographers. In Anderson's shot (lot 832), we also not only see the Arch of Titus (in the front left) but due to the high level of background depth in the image, we also see the ruins of the Aqua Claudia, which provided the city with water in ancient times. Comparing the works of Caneva, Macpherson and Anderson also provides us with many insights into contemporary life, for example the increasing cultivation of the agricultural land in the foreground.
