“Le Chinois” is one of Carpeaux's most important works. It exists in two versions. The sketchy version of 1868 and the more naturalistic version of 1872, all rendered in three different materials: marble, bronze or terracotta. A bronze version was cast in a posthumus edition with signature, stamp and pastille. Busts in the combination of bronze and marble are so far unknown.
