A bamboo kiseruzutsu. Around 1900

Of musozutsu type. Lacquered dark brown, carved with Gama Sennin holding up his toad, a negative image revealing the underlying bamboo, the ends chamfered to form facets. The rim lined with shakudo. Signed Yozan and sealed.
Length 21 cm

The design is derived from a small illustration in “Hokusai Manga”, vol. 3 (1815), p. 13b
