A large umimatsu netsuke of a cicada on an oak branch, by Kanman (1793-1859). Early 19th century

Carved with a
cicada sitting on a branch with acorns and a large leaf, extracting food from a bark-free spot. The veins of the wings as well as those of the leaves are just as finely rendered as the tree bark, whose fibrous structure is redered by stippling and is visible on the upper and lower part of the trunk. Signed Iwami no kuni no ju Kanman to with kao in a irregular reserve.
